CANADA FOR FOODIES

Canada’s vast landscapes provide an abundance of fresh produce, while the country’s rich cultural mosaic has created a varied food scene. French and British influences abound here, but you’ll also find First Nations game dishes, exotic Asian fare, and hearty Eastern European cuisine on offer.

Magical Markets

Canada’s markets are a delight for the senses. Farmers’ markets are piled high with fruit and veg, artisan cheeses, and bottles of maple syrup. Ethnic markets proffer traditional breads and mouth-watering international street-food. Head to St Lawrence Market in Toronto or Montreal’s Jean-Talon Market  for an unmissable experience.

Sumptuous Seafood

Two ocean coastlines plus lakes and rivers galore mean seafood and freshwater fish are in abundance in Canada. Top dishes to try include clam chowder, crab cakes, fresh lobster, and sockeye salmon. Fish and chips, inherited from Britain, are also available everywhere. Excellent seafood spots include Raymonds Restaurant (95 Water St, St. John’s) and Rodney’s Oyster House (469 King St W, Toronto).

Canadian Wine

Canada produces some excellent wines from hybrid grapes, thanks largely to European winemakers who have emigrated here. Delicious ice wine, a dessert wine made from grapes frozen naturally on the vine, is a specialty of the Niagara Peninsula . Other winemaking regions to visit include Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley and Okanagan Valley in southern BC
